Top Trends for Web Design in 2024

Doug Barger • Feb 09, 2024

With 2024 well underway, many web design trends are emerging (or reemerging) across the digital marketing industry. Plenty is happening in this industry sector concerning web design trends, too. Some more exciting trends include a resurgence of old typography styles, utilizing video backgrounds more efficiently, and the growing focus on user experience.

Typography Trends 2024

In web design, typography is written material's style, structure, and appearance. Typography can include the content on your website, headers, links, and any other text you may have on your web pages. Understanding typography is important for your website because it can help you build and market your brand, draw your audience's attention to specific areas of your website, and help your target audience understand how you can provide helpful products or services for their needs.

Kinetic Typography

A major reemerging trend in web design is kinetic typography. Kinetic typography is a text style that moves to entertain, draw attention, or set a specific tone. On your website, you can have text that:

  • “Fades in” to draw attention to itself or “fades out” so users can focus on other parts of a website
  • Represents your business or products through motion, such as having the text “paint” itself onto the page for a paint supply store
  • Fonts that shift color to create a specific tone, such as going to orange, black, and purple, around Halloween

Having kinetic typography can help your website tell your brand’s story more effectively and make your website more memorable. For example, one project we did for Kentucky River Tours has text that fades in when the page loads.

Gaining Your Audience's Attention Without Motion

Another part of typography is understanding other ways fonts can get your audience's attention without kinetic typography. Examples of ways some businesses choose to get their audience’s attention include:

  • Bolding font surrounded by unbolded font
  • Capitalizing letters surrounded by regular text
  • Using very large and very small font
  • Choosing specific colors for text

While these are only some ways you can use fonts to get attention, they’re often very effective. Ashford Acres Inn’s webpage, another project of ours, has larger fonts to draw attention and uses different font styles.

Video Backgrounds in Web Design

Historically, using videos as the background for a website wasn’t a good practice in web design since it created longer loading times and could affect the overall performance of a web page. However, technology has advanced with more streamlined video formats and better coding practices, allowing us to use them without causing large website load times.

Using video for your website background comes with a few benefits. First, it allows you to insert more of your branding and processes into your webpage, which can improve user experience. Then, you can use the videos to create a more engaging website, highlight information about your business, and direct visitors to perform specific actions. Consider this webpage for Marshall Lifestyle Medicine as an example.

Web Design Focused on User Experience

Your website is for people, so focusing on user experience (UX) is integral to a successful website. There are many aspects of UX-focused web design that you can use to ensure your website is enjoyable for visitors, but some of the most important are:

  • User control: People make mistakes, and that’s alright. User control is a way to help your website’s users reverse mistakes they may make easily, such as correcting information on a shipping form.
  • User accessibility: A variety of people will use your website, so it’s essential to design it with everyone's accessibility in mind. After all, the more people can use your website, the more likely you are to develop leads.
  • Usability: People want easy access to products and information, which extends to web design. Creating easily usable websites is critical to UX because when people are in a research stage, something as simple as easier-to-access information can be the difference between whether they choose your products and services or a competitor’s.

Consider this webpage for Stamper’s Blinds Gallery, where any information is only “one click away.”
